Frequently Asked Questions at Becomings Therapy Services
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that can use art in its therapeutic process. And in many ways, it won't be that different from other talking therapies. My aim is to offer you a safe, supportive and non-judgmental relationship so you are able to share, explore, and make sense your world. As therapy progresses, patterns begin to emerge and we will be able to reflect and explore these.
You don’t have to be good at art, nor do you have to make art in art therapy. Sessions will change throughout time; it will take different formats depending on what you feel comfortable with each session, your needs and your own process.
However, the art in art therapy can be particularly helpful. Although not necessary, art can help you express and explore abstract and complex thoughts and feelings. And with this, you'll be able to understand yourself better and changes can start to happen.
You will get stronger and more able to make better and healthier choices in your life.

"Working with Marta has been great. I felt comfortable after a short space of time and I've found it really easy to open up to her. I've definitely noticed a difference to my wellbeing since starting therapy and I'd highly recommend her services. I've found the Art Therapy in particular very helpful as an approach for myself."

Finding the right therapist for you can be daunting.
There are so many things to take into consideration. If you are already feeling anxious, the whole process can be even more intimidating. The best thing to do, really, is to follow your gut and instinct.
Make sure to read through various therapists' profiles and websites, but contact a few. Most therapists will offer you 15 minutes of introduction for you to have a sense of what it might be like to work with them.
Make sure to choose someone you feel comfortable with, you need to trust the therapist at some point; this relationship needs to start with warmth and with you feeling comfortable and welcomed.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions people have asked me when looking for therapy.
These are only generic questions, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your questions.

These are all questions I am asked a lot... I hope to be able to answer this here. However, it is important to know that every single person will have a very individual set of circumstances and therapy is different to everyone that I work with.
Generally, there are many reasons why people seek out therapy. Life isn't always easy; circumstances and ourselves change through time, and we may need independent 'head space' to make sense of it all.
There are many levels of therapy work, going from the 'lighter' version where clients use their therapy as part of their selfcare and to monitor their well-being, to a more in-depth, reparative and transformative therapy work, where the client will work through past trauma(s) and will be reflecting upon patterns in their relationships or life in general. Many clients will fluctuate through various levels of depth through their therapy work.
One of my main roles, to make sure it is safe and manageable for the clients, is to make sure that we are at the right level of depth. Therapy work will always need to be comfortable to the client, and we will continuously monitor and regularly review how therapy is going for you.
As a general rule, the longer and greater commitment you are towards your therapy work, the greater and longer lasting results you will see.
Whether you engage in person or in online, therapy offers you a safe environment with trained and non-judgmental support to listen and witness your story and help you organise and understand your thoughts and emotions at the same time as helping you to consider trying out different strategies and ways of looking into your life, world and relationships you already have.
Difficult and painful past experiences can affect the way we live in the present. A skilful and experienced therapist will support you understand and healing from the past, grounding you in a more fulfilling present, supporting you become a stronger and happier self.

The first step is to contact me to arrange an Introductory Meeting. It is really important that we feel that we can work together; this is crucial! Therapeutic success depends on various things, such as: a skilful therapist and therapy modality/approach, how much you invest and work in the therapeutic process, for how long you engage in therapy, but fundamentally on the therapeutic relationship! Without feeling comfortable or able to trust your therapist you may not make much therapeutic progress... |
An Introductory Meeting usually takes between 15 to 20 minutes. It offers an opportunity for us to meet online before we decide on working together. During this meeting we can discuss:
- Any questions you may have about therapy or my practice
- What brings you to therapy at this time
- Your aims and goals
- How we will monitor your progress in therapy
The important thing, is that therapy is really for you and it is always your decision whether you want to stop it. Usually, I like to start with a six weeks assessment period. This is the time I think we need to see the therapy potential. At the end of this period, we are usually at a better position to decide how to move forward. Some clients are ready to end, others can move their sessions to fortnightly, many continue weekly sessions for a while longer.
I tend to see clients who value their therapy space as part of their wellbeing, and often we work continuously or on an on and off pattern. There is value in building a strong therapeutic relationship, and only come to sessions when needed; engaging in therapy for one to 6 months and then have a period of no therapy to then return if there is anything happening in their lives that they would like to have their therapy space again.
The decision of stopping, pausing or ongoing is discussed regularly, I might make my suggestions, though it is always the client decision. and, whenever we agree to pause or end the therapy work, we'll plan a time to bring the work to an end in two to four weeks ahead.

My consulting room has two distinct areas: a sitting area and a creating area. In person, you will have a folder and a box to keep all your artwork from session to sessions, you can take work home, you can also bring your own art materials or any artwork you made elsewhere, but also you bring artwork that you come across anywhere to explore in therapy.
Some reflective and very interesting work can be done with natural materials and found objects, but also photocopies of letters or photographs, and other things you may already have.

No! And that is not the purpose of the art in the therapy room. I do not interpret your art work. Sometimes I can ask you to use art to express or develop an idea, or to represent something specific to what is being discussed in our sessions. I might ask you to make an image to represent a feeling, a relationship, or the people, places and events that are important to you. Your artwork interpretation and meaning will come from you and at your pace. |

Therapy 6 or 12 Sessions PackagesYou may also wish to offer a gift package of 6 or 12 sessions to a loved one. You may know of someone who could do with the extra financial support to either continue existing therapeutic work, or to help someone kick-start their therapy journey. Financial concerns, are one of the most frequent, real or perceived, reasons why people are unable to start, or feel they have to drop out off therapy. Offering a Therapy Sessions Package may not resolve everything, but it might be just enough to turn things around and give an individual the permission to continue investing and working in therapy independently. There are some considerations to think about before purchasing these packages. Please contact me to discuss these options further. |
